Artist Spotlight: Sister Sledge

It’s been 25 years since Sister Sledge released ‘We Are Family’, their third studio album. Known for tracks such as ‘We Are Family’, ‘Lost In Music’ and ‘Thinking Of You’, it’s no secret why their music has stood the test of time.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been playing this album in it’s entirety and after seeing them perform live in 2023, I was already aware of the vast amount of music they have that I haven’t heard before.

I’ve become a bigger fan than I was before and due to their incredible partnership with Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, the songwriting and musicianship across the album is something to be noted.

Tracks like ‘Somebody Loves Me’, ‘Easier To Love’ and ‘You’re A Friend To Me’ take a slower pace and bring the soulful side of the group to the forefront, which is different to the usual funk/disco sound we’re used to them performing. These tracks are a reminder of how incredibly well and intricately love can be written about, something I am a huge fan of.

If you’re yet to delve into their catalogue, I’d recommend ‘We Are Family’ as it’s got some of my favourite tracks and explores the different sounds that make Sister Sledge the legendary group they are.
